This is a copy after a painting in a palace in Gotha (lost during the War and recently restored to the town of Gotha), depicting the marriage in 1636 of Ernest I and Princess Elizabeth Sophie. Both sitters are holding hands; wearing white wedding outfits embroidered in gold, he with gold rosettes on his shoes, both with gold chains around their chests; standing beneath a golden canopy, the backcloth with coat of arms.
This work is framed in the same design as a pair of small scale portraits after Cranach brought over from Coburg by Prince Albert in 1640 (RCIN 401385 and 401388). It was presumably acquired Prince Albert at the same time in the same spirit of piety for his Saxon ancestors.Provenance
Acquired by Prince Albert, whose brand appears on the reverse of the panel
