Bombe chest of drawers of ebonised wood with red griotte marble top. Front and sides fitted with Japanese laquer panels of landscape scenes; framed with chased and scrolled foliate gilt bronze mounts. Contains two drawers. On four cabriole legs. Generally known by his initials, BVRB specialised in rococo furniture decorated with floral marquetry, lacquer or porcelain. The 17th century Japanese lacquer used on this piece was probably taken from a screen or a coffer. Any small imperfections caused by the transfer were disguised with French lacquer and the skilful use of naturalistic gilt bronze mounts.
Provenance
Purchased by George IV in July 1829 from the dealer Robert Owen, Bond Street, for £110 5s (RA 26458 and 32767).
