The delicate and fanciful design of these vases, characteristic of production at Vincennes in the early years, dates from 1754. Jean-Claude Duplessis, who was one of the most influential artistic directors of models at Vincennes and Sèvres during the years 1745-74, was probably responsible for its design.
Circular in plan, the vase is partly fluted and decorated on the lower section with a bleu lapis ground, overlaid by gold caillouté decoration, a popular design motif employed at Sèvres during the 1750s and 1760s.
The appeal of these vases seems not to have lasted, being overtaken by the fashion for vases in the severe neo-classical style in the 1760s and 1770s.
