A gilt-bronze clock mounted with Chinese and French porcelain figures of flowers, Shoulao (god of long life) and a deer.
The original clock movement (now missing) is mounted in a cup of mid eighteenth-century Chantilly porcelain painted in enamels in the 'Kakiemon style', fitted with a concave glass face within a gilt-bronze ring cast with leaves, formed as a door hinged on the left. It is raised on a branching stem surrounded by four French porcelain flowers, the stem rising from a shaped, rectangular base with C- and S-scrolls and on curving foliate feet.
Mounted on the base is a south Chinese porcelain figure, possibly of Shoulao (god of long life in Chinese mythology), probably made in the Kangxi period (1662-1772). He holds a peach, has a full, white beard and white cap and wears a long-sleeved blue robe and white under-robe. His apron, face and hands are in unglazed, light brown biscuit, and inside his sleeve are vestiges of unfired red pigment. The recumbent deer at his side was made in the famille verte style (predominantly green enamelled porcelain), its back splashed with aubergine-purple; in its mouth, a spray of lingzhi in red and green, and its beard painted yellow. The deer was made in Jingdezhen in the early eighteenth century.
