Photograph of a half length group portrait of Queen Elizabeth (1900-2002) seated in the centre, flanked by Princess Elizabeth (b. 1926) now HM Queen Elizabeth II, seated on the left and Princess Margaret (1930-2002) seated on the right. Both Princesses wear sleeveless dresses.
On 20 January 1936 King George V died at Sandringham and the Prince of Wales acceded to the throne as King Edward VIII. He was never crowned, abdicating after a reign of only 325 days. On 11 December the Duke of York was proclaimed Sovereign, as King George VI. This portrait of Queen Elizabeth with Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret was taken at a sitting on the 15 December 1936, just four days after the accession of King George VI.Provenance
