Description:

Photograph of Prince Alfred, who is seated on the ground outside, holding a stick in his left hand. He wears shoes, knee-length socks, kilt, jacket and hat.

In 1856, Prince Alfred (1844-1900) was shortly to leave his family in order to begin his naval career. The prince was photographed at least twice by Fenton at Balmoral. On both occasions, he appears to be lost in thought as he lies on the ground, dressed in his tweed jacket and kilt.
