Exterior view of church ruins. Samaria was an important city within the ancient Kingdom of Israel (now the State of Israel). It has traditionally been associated with St John the Baptist. This church, which dates from the 5th century, was believed to mark the burial site of the head of St John the Baptist. The body was buried nearby. Today the Great Mosque of Damascus claims to hold the head of the saint.
The photograph is signed, captioned and dated in the negative, 'F Bedford Sebastieh'. The number in the Day & Son series is 81.Provenance
