The 'Yelcho' sighted 30 - 30 Aug 1916
Silver bromide print | 15.8 x 20.5 cm (image) | RCIN 2580122
-
Photograph showing members of Elephant Island Party standing at shore and looking out to sea where relief ship 'Yelcho' is visible on the horizon. Hurley altered the original negative of this image to create a more dramatic scene. The relief ship 'Yelcho' was originally photographed nearer the shore; Hurley has erased it and painted in another vessel further away on the horizon. The smoke from the beacon on the hillside was also added by hand to emphasise the men’s desperation.
