Entering the pack ice. Weddell Sea, lat. 57? 59' S. long. 22? 39' W 9 Dec 1914
Photograph of six members of Shackleton's crew standing on the deck of Endurance.
This was the men’s first view of the pack ice through which they had to navigate in order to reach the coast of Antarctica. The Endurance met the ice far further north than they had hoped. The whalers on South Georgia had warned them of the poor ice conditions before they set out. This was a warning of things to come.
