Description:

Audubon’s youth was divided between France and the estate near Philadelphia belonging to his father, a French naval officer. After some training in drawing in Paris, he hunted and drew birds in France, but it was the wonderful varied American fauna that inspired his main work. His wife persuaded him to concentrate on the birds that he observed there. Audubon’s drawings were engraved and published in Great Britain as 'The Birds of America' between 1827 and 1838. The plates were issued to subscribers in groups of five, one image in each group filling the double-elephant sheet, one occupying most of the sheet and three smaller images. The full set of 435 plates were normally bound in four volumes. It was one of the largest and most ambitious publications ever to be produced.

It appears that George IV was one of the original subscribers, and that on his death his subscription may have passed to Queen Adelaide, and subsequently to Queen Victoria, since the Royal Collection’s copy is first recorded in her library.

The majority of the plates were engraved by the British engraver Robert Havell (1793–1878).
