Sèvres soft-paste porcelain chocolate pot. Beau bleu with gilded decoration; in the oval reserve four figures are seated drinking. The projecting stump for the handle is partly sheathed in a threaded silver-gilt sleeve, which is encircled by a beaded moulding; it is engraved with a serpentine berried laurel trail. The tubular, flat-bottomed pot, tapering slightly towards the top, has a white sparrow-beak spout decorated in gold on a white ground with foliate scrolls and husks. Its domed, loose cover is pierced with an opening for the swizzle stick (moussoir), and is fitted with a flat blue and gold cover crowned by a gilded ball-shaped knob.
Provenance
May have been purchased by George IV in 1815 from Robert Fogg. His bill for the quarter ending 10 October 1815 included: ‘a Sève Porcelaine Coffee Pot [sic] fine blue ground painted with figures £42’. Recorded in 1826 in the Confectionary, Carlton House: ‘No. 172. A Coffee Pot [sic] and Cover of dark blue and gold scroll, painted in Landscape with four figures’.
