-
John Dryden (1631-1700) was a poet, literary critic, translator and playwright. He became the first official Poet Laureate in 1668, under King Charles II, holding the post until 1689. After the Glorious Revolution, the post was given first to Thomas Shadwell (c.1640-1692), and after his death to Nahum Tate (c.1652–1715). This book is part of a four-volume set of Dryden's collected works, published after his death in 1767. The work is illustrated with a series of small engravings, mostly portraits, including one of Charles II.
