One such trendsetter was Mary of Modena, second wife of James VII of Scotland, who wears a richly embroidered masculine riding habit in a portrait by Simon Verelst (c.1675). Frances Teresa Stuart, Duchess of Richmond, also favoured this fashion and is seen wearing a buff coat, a quintessentially male item of dress, in a portrait by Jacob Huysmans (1664). ...
